In early 2001, we began managing at eighty-acre field for wildlife and prairie restoration. Here we share what we've learned about the challenges and rewards of working with a relatively small acreage surrounded by land managed for other purposes: commercial, industrial, residential, and agricultural in a county with the fastest development curve in the state.

As open land disappears, people interested in conserving wildlife habitat and native plant communities find fewer and fewer large acreages available...yet most of the published advice is based on research from tracts larger than 100 acres...often more than 1000. Small-scale wildlife management and ecological restoration follow the same basic principles, but the special conditions created by small acreages require a different mix of techniques.
