Winter Dawns

A winter dawn with the full moon silvering the distant grass-fields, the light in the sky slowly growing, colors changing on land and in the sky moment-to-moment; that moment when sky-light and moonlight are balanced, and then the sun’s loom takes over–before the actual sunlight touches the tops of the trees with a rosy-golden glow.

For a few minutes, the distant field glows orange; more light returns it to bleached gold.     There’s always some high streak of cloud to give a touch of pink for a few minutes (the high clouds are now showing the palest warm gray, not quite white yet.)  The horizon still has a hint of pink, but above it is a broad band of pale lemon yellow, that then shades into pale blue.

Now the moon contributes no light, comparitively–it’s a decoration behind the branches of a redbud, a pale flat circle.   The first rays of sun have touched distant trees with that odd gold-rose that so quickly changes to yellow.

Clear winter dawns–worth waking up for.

    What a lovely description.

Our world is blue with just a few hints of orange glowing between storm grey clouds. There isn’t much snow, but it’s unbroken by tracks. The world is as quiet as it only gets after a snowfall.

Snow-hush…I love that, both during a less-windy snowfall and after.

We’re due to get some tomorrow, with highs in the 20s. Right now, well after sunrise, there are fine skeins of high clouds moving across, pale blue between them. There’s a north breeze, but not too strong–though I see it’s just picked up (suddenly the branches, not the twigs, are moving.)
