this clearly shows Ashe junipers (&#8220;cedars&#8221;) heavily loaded with snow, and bent over.\u00a0 They provide excellent winter storm cover for small birds; the ground underneath often stays clear of snow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-870\" title=\"snow-west-grass111\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snow-west-grass1111.jpg\" alt=\"snow-west-grass111\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snow-west-grass1111.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snow-west-grass1111-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><em>Looking south across the West Grass, between the Dry Woods and the creek<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The darker line of trees on the right is the Creek Woods, trending south and widest at the south end;\u00a0 the creek woods meets the fencerow trees on the south fenceline (here about a quarter mile away.)\u00a0 Grass composition varies across this area, and there are old terraces involved, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-863\" title=\"snow-north-ford114\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snow-north-ford1141.jpg\" alt=\"snow-north-ford114\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snow-north-ford1141.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snow-north-ford1141-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/>North Ford of creek, near north fenceline<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Once more I sheltered under a tree (this time an Ashe juniper) to get the camera ready and then stepped out to take this.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The creek flows from right (north) to left (south) with many twists and turns&#8211;there&#8217;s a sharp turn about 20-30 yards upstream, and just below the ford.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On a snowy morning, the horses frolic like kids out of school.
