{"id":662,"date":"2009-12-18T17:36:46","date_gmt":"2009-12-18T23:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=662"},"modified":"2009-12-18T17:38:12","modified_gmt":"2009-12-18T23:38:12","slug":"trees-and-bees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=662","title":{"rendered":"Trees and Bees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Richard and Michael were up in the dry woods today to cut down our Christmas trees (we use Ashe junipers we&#8217;d want to get rid of anyway), and while they were looking for the right tree, they found a swarm of bees.\u00a0\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t able to go out right away to photograph them, and by the time I did get out, mid-late afternoon, the bees were very, very, <em>very<\/em> active.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As in, those bees did not want anyone to come closer to where the swarm had been seen.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had bees (nice gentle Italian bees) and know that Africanized bees are in this county&#8230;so when a bee starts that &#8220;vrooom-vrooom&#8221; kind of humming\/buzzing, I&#8217;m not inclined to argue with her.\u00a0\u00a0 I went on up the trail to Fox Pavilion.\u00a0\u00a0 The stonecrop is getting large enough to see; I love the delicate colors it has before its flowers open.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-663\" title=\"stonecrop-winter-forbs001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/stonecrop-winter-forbs001.jpg\" alt=\"stonecrop-winter-forbs001\" width=\"328\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/stonecrop-winter-forbs001.jpg 328w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/stonecrop-winter-forbs001-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t know what the two forbs are growing at the bottom (green leaves) and top (purple leaves), but the stonecrop was quite pretty&#8211;and when it flowers this year, we&#8217;ll have a mass of yellow on the rock.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t spend long looking for interesting things to photograph, because I had bread in the oven, so on the way back to the house I paused to look at the lichens and ball moss on a cedar elm.\u00a0\u00a0 I may try to post the ball moss photo later, but here&#8217;s some bright yellow lichen with fruiting bodies like fringed orange goblets:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-664\" title=\"lichen-fruiting-bodies011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/lichen-fruiting-bodies011.jpg\" alt=\"lichen-fruiting-bodies011\" width=\"313\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/lichen-fruiting-bodies011.jpg 313w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/lichen-fruiting-bodies011-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the bread came out, I went into the back yard where the old white jonquils or daffodils (not really sure which) are still blooming under the ash tree.\u00a0 Last year they didn&#8217;t bloom at all because of the drought, but this year they started early:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-665\" title=\"small-white-daff016\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/small-white-daff016.jpg\" alt=\"small-white-daff016\" width=\"214\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/small-white-daff016.jpg 214w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/small-white-daff016-205x300.jpg 205w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many stems have 3-5 flowers, not just one, but this is the clearest picture I got.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Someone had planted these years and years ago along the driveway in front;
