{"id":573,"date":"2009-11-12T10:13:06","date_gmt":"2009-11-12T16:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=573"},"modified":"2009-11-12T10:13:06","modified_gmt":"2009-11-12T16:13:06","slug":"spring-in-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=573","title":{"rendered":"Spring in Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two years of drought followed by heavy rains in a warm fall has produced bursts of spring flowering and some spring butterflies even as it&#8217;s produced sudden fall color&#8230;a very odd combination.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-574\" title=\"great-purple-hairstreak278\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/great-purple-hairstreak278.jpg\" alt=\"great-purple-hairstreak278\" width=\"313\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/great-purple-hairstreak278.jpg 313w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/great-purple-hairstreak278-293x300.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This very fresh male Great Purple Hairstreak,\u00a0 <em>Atlides halesus<\/em>,\u00a0 flew nearby at knee level on November 10.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We usually see them only in spring, when they&#8217;re one of the many butterflies all over flowering elbowbush and wild plum.\u00a0 But here he was, flashing the brilliant iridescent blue of his dorsal wing surface in short flights, and then posing demurely with wings closed, giving only tantalizing hints of the hidden beauty.\u00a0 The two apparent white spots on the hind wing are actually lime green, but I&#8217;ve never been able to get that color to show in the images.\u00a0 I was hoping,\u00a0 with such a fresh and vividly colored specimen, that it would&#8211;but once again it washed out.<\/p>\n<p>I lacked the skill to catch a really good shot of this butterfly in flight, but did get one blurry shot of the dorsal wing surface that barely conveys the startling vividness of that blue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-576\" title=\"great-purple-hairstreak-dorsal284\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/great-purple-hairstreak-dorsal2841.jpg\" alt=\"great-purple-hairstreak-dorsal284\" width=\"262\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/great-purple-hairstreak-dorsal2841.jpg 262w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/great-purple-hairstreak-dorsal2841-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve also seen a few freshly-emerged Monarchs&#8230;flying north.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I hope they get turned around, but if they aren&#8217;t in reproductive diapause, their little internal guidance center may be telling them the wrong thing.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Our other butterflies are a mix of autumn-winter species and spring ones.<\/p>\n<p>Flowering on the land at the moment is also a mix of spring and fall.\u00a0 Blackfoot Daisies will flower any time there&#8217;s rain and it&#8217;s warm enough&#8211;and the little mounds of white are widespread.\u00a0\u00a0 Greenthread, usually found in spring only, is flowering.\u00a0 So is a tiny little blue vervain.\u00a0\u00a0 Heath aster is variable but usually quits earlier than this;
