Muhlys, but I don&#8217;t know which.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0 found one sideoats grama whose seedheads still had color&#8211;had rebloomed after the rain.\u00a0\u00a0 Here its red shows up well against the soft blue-green of prickly pear, and below it are three seedheads of silky bluestem:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-534\" width=\"256\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/sideoats-silky-blstm-cactus115.jpg 256w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/sideoats-silky-blstm-cactus115-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lots of butterflies were out&#8211;mostly American Snouts, but also various sulphurs (not cooperative about holding still for pictures except for the smallest, the Dainty Sulphur) and various skippers, including quite a few Common Skippers, both male and female.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-535\" title=\"skipper-on-mallow081\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/skipper-on-mallow081.jpg\" alt=\"skipper-on-mallow081\" width=\"322\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/skipper-on-mallow081.jpg 322w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/skipper-on-mallow081-300x245.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 322px) 100vw, 322px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s on one of the tiny yellow mallow-family flowers (another just visible in upper right corner.)<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a Dainty Sulphur, one of a half-dozen each perched singly on the dried flower-head of this Compositae:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-536\" title=\"dainty-sulfur133\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/dainty-sulfur133.jpg 274w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/dainty-sulfur133-270x300.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here and there in the dry woods, I found wild onion blooming:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-537\" title=\"wild-onion096\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/wild-onion096.jpg\" alt=\"wild-onion096\" width=\"211\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/wild-onion096.jpg 211w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/wild-onion096-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the prize for the day was finding that the small population of <em>Mirabilis alba,<\/em> a native prairie forb, up by the SW corner of the dry woods, had multiplied&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-538\" title=\"sm-mirabilis-alba-flower075\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/sm-mirabilis-alba-flower075.jpg\" alt=\"sm-mirabilis-alba-flower075\" width=\"197\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/sm-mirabilis-alba-flower075.jpg 197w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/sm-mirabilis-alba-flower075-181x300.jpg 181w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It first showed up in our restoration project quite a distance from this\u00a0 group, and several years before it.\u00a0\u00a0 Glad to see it spreading.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to recognize except when it&#8217;s blooming, and due to the drought it didn&#8217;t bloom at its normal time this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some grasses should be planted just for the way they look with
