{"id":520,"date":"2009-11-04T19:31:06","date_gmt":"2009-11-05T01:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=520"},"modified":"2009-11-04T19:31:06","modified_gmt":"2009-11-05T01:31:06","slug":"early-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=520","title":{"rendered":"Early November"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dry-woods swale is slowly drying up:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-521\" title=\"drywoods-swale029\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/drywoods-swale029.jpg\" alt=\"drywoods-swale029\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/drywoods-swale029.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/drywoods-swale029-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The pale area is where water stood for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Up on Cactus Flat, the flameleaf sumacs&#8211;stunted because they&#8217;re growing out of a solid rock&#8211;are at their fall best:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-522\" title=\"flameleaf-sumac012\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/flameleaf-sumac012.jpg\" alt=\"flameleaf-sumac012\" width=\"327\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/flameleaf-sumac012.jpg 327w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/flameleaf-sumac012-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After I went through the dry woods and came out into the west grass, I was surrounded by hundreds (thousands?) of American snout butterflies&#8211;and this one landed on a stem of KRB long enough to be photographed:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-523\" title=\"American-snout019\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/American-snout019.jpg\" alt=\"American-snout019\" width=\"185\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/American-snout019.jpg 185w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/American-snout019-183x300.jpg 183w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Between Deer Ford and Gravel Ford,\u00a0 I spotted this female Variegated Meadowhawk perched high on a bare twig:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-524\" title=\"variegated-meadowhawk-f044\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/variegated-meadowhawk-f044.jpg\" alt=\"variegated-meadowhawk-f044\" width=\"306\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/variegated-meadowhawk-f044.jpg 306w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/variegated-meadowhawk-f044-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This species is the most numerous dragonfly right now, though I&#8217;m also seeing some Common Green Darners.\u00a0\u00a0 The males of this species are flashy red with &#8220;silver&#8221; markings (actually white, but so placed that they look silver.)<\/p>\n<p>Gravel Ford reveals the bank of poorly consolidated gravel sediment&#8211;it&#8217;s our worst erosion problem right now.\u00a0 Water comes off the West Grass and also overflows the creekbank upstream, pouring down this way&#8211;despite the four gabions we&#8217;ve built, we&#8217;re still losing soil off the gravel, and the native plants with it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-525\" title=\"gravel-ford049\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/gravel-ford049.jpg\" alt=\"gravel-ford049\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/gravel-ford049.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/gravel-ford049-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a happier note, the possumhaw in the yard has finally decided to put out some good berries this year:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-526\" title=\"possumhaw-berries006\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/possumhaw-berries006.jpg\" alt=\"possumhaw-berries006\" width=\"318\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/possumhaw-berries006.jpg 318w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/possumhaw-berries006-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We also have &#8220;wild&#8221;
