other survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though we lost the two planted cypresses to the drought, and some of the water iris we&#8217;d planted in the &#8220;swamp&#8221;, this one survived and is now coming back up from the corm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-452\" title=\"iris-revives243\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/iris-revives243.jpg\" alt=\"iris-revives243\" width=\"220\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/iris-revives243.jpg 220w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/iris-revives243-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The water here is about an inch deep&#8211;this is an overflow\/seep channel off the main creek; 8.5 inches didn&#8217;t put more than a flood pulse through it, but the final 1.5 inches left this wide shallow pool&#8230;and a brave little iris.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The late-flowering thoroughwort, <em>Eupatorium serotina<\/em>, attracted several different kinds of small butterflies.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a Gray Hairstreak&#8217;s, <em>Strymon melinus<\/em>&#8216;,\u00a0 top view:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-453\" title=\"gray-hairstreak258\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gray-hairstreak258.jpg\" alt=\"gray-hairstreak258\" width=\"303\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gray-hairstreak258.jpg 303w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gray-hairstreak258-300x249.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In some lights, there&#8217;s more bluish to the upper wing surface, but mostly they perch with their wings folded and all you see is the pale lower surface:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-454\" title=\"gray-hairstreak264\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gray-hairstreak264.jpg\" alt=\"gray-hairstreak264\" width=\"312\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gray-hairstreak264.jpg 312w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gray-hairstreak264-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A surprise was the very coppery-looking Olive Juniper Hairstreak, <em>Callophrys gryneus<\/em>.\u00a0 I usually see these in early spring, all over the wild plum flowers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-455\" title=\"juniper-hairstreak255\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/juniper-hairstreak255.jpg\" alt=\"juniper-hairstreak255\" width=\"271\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/juniper-hairstreak255.jpg 271w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/juniper-hairstreak255-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most of ours are greener than this&#8230;.there&#8217;s a variety of this species known as the Siva Juniper Hairstreak that&#8217;s browner-to-purply; the intergrading between varieties starts about here.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not enough of a butterfly expert to know for sure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-456\" title=\"juniper-hairstreak257\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/juniper-hairstreak257.jpg\" alt=\"juniper-hairstreak257\" width=\"306\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/juniper-hairstreak257.jpg 306w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/juniper-hairstreak257-300x277.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whichever it is, I love the delicate shadings of coppery-olive-gold, with the crisp black and white markings in addition.<\/p>\n<p>At least two species of skipper were on the same flower clusters, and I don&#8217;t know what either of them is (haven&#8217;t had time to look them up yet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-457\" title=\"unk-skipper266\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper266.jpg\" alt=\"unk-skipper266\" width=\"305\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper266.jpg 305w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper266-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And a slightly different angle on the same individual:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-458\" title=\"unk-skipper267\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper267.jpg\" alt=\"unk-skipper267\" width=\"305\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper267.jpg 305w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper267-300x259.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Skipper #2 was browner, with whiter markings:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-459\" title=\"unk-skipper262\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper262.jpg\" alt=\"unk-skipper262\" width=\"310\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper262.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unk-skipper262-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally,\u00a0 I was trying for a close-up of the flowers of a fall-flowering milkweed, and discovered that it was inhabited:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-460\" title=\"zizotes-inhabited282\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zizotes-inhabited282.jpg\" alt=\"zizotes-inhabited282\" width=\"286\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zizotes-inhabited282.jpg 286w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zizotes-inhabited282-270x300.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had seen the ants crawling over the flowers and buds, but the spider&#8217;s legs (just visible at the base of the flower) I didn&#8217;t see until I looked at the shot in the computer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This milkweed is Zizotes, or <em>Asclepias oenotheroides<\/em>;
