it&#8217;s amazing that in one week it&#8217;s turned so green.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The darker streak in the middle distance is the grass waterway when it rains and right now is just dry enough to walk on in regular shoes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There are still very squashy spots, and a few where water&#8217;s still running across the ground from up near the highway, but not right here (off to the right, in the picture).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The squashy spots can fool you now that we have a lot of grass on the place&#8230;for instance:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-429\" title=\"stuckness195\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/stuckness195.jpg\" alt=\"stuckness195\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/stuckness195.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/stuckness195-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is up near the dry woods where it&#8217;s normally&#8230;well&#8230;dry.\u00a0 But in heavy rains, water runs off the rock in the dry woods and soaks this area, which is normally covered with shortgrasses.\u00a0\u00a0 The sticks under the back wheels are a previous day&#8217;s effort at extrication.<\/p>\n<p>Today went better.\u00a0 The ground had dried just enough, and Richard was able to back it out&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-430\" title=\"unstuckness196\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unstuckness196.jpg\" alt=\"unstuckness196\" width=\"313\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unstuckness196.jpg 313w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/unstuckness196-300x246.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here and there, old prairie plants emerge through the remnants of more modern (and less durable) ones:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-431\" title=\"Mirabilis-alba192\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Mirabilis-alba192.jpg\" alt=\"Mirabilis-alba192\" width=\"218\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Mirabilis-alba192.jpg 218w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Mirabilis-alba192-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Mirabilis alba<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This lovely &#8220;four-o&#8217;-clock&#8221; does indeed open its purple-pink flowers in late afternoon and then drop the delicate petals, leaving a dry, papery husk that fairly glows in the slanting light.<\/p>\n<p>Cenizo is another purple-pink flowering plant&#8211;a woody shrub this time&#8211;with soft velvety silvery gray leaves.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-432\" title=\"cenizo-flowering143\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/cenizo-flowering143.jpg\" alt=\"cenizo-flowering143\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/cenizo-flowering143.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/cenizo-flowering143-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It blooms readily when it rains (sometimes even as the humidity rises before a rain) and the flowers last only a day or so.<\/p>\n<p>Down in the creekbed, while it was still very damp, I spotted this snake-track, pale against the darker soil:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-434\" title=\"snake-track-creek151\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/snake-track-creek1511.jpg\" alt=\"snake-track-creek151\" width=\"304\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/snake-track-creek1511.jpg 304w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/snake-track-creek1511-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This picture was taken earlier in the week.\u00a0 You can also see the dark &#8220;ledge&#8221; of fine clay soil that was carried on the flood surge.<\/p>\n<p>A very happy crayfish made this new chimney (and there were many others) near the pool behind the #3 gabion:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-435\" title=\"fresh-crawdad-chimney204\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fresh-crawdad-chimney204.jpg\" alt=\"fresh-crawdad-chimney204\" width=\"213\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fresh-crawdad-chimney204.jpg 213w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fresh-crawdad-chimney204-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/>You can just see the surface of muddy water down the hole.\u00a0 Three nearby chimneys were plugged at the top with fresh, but drying, mud.\u00a0 This keeps the interior of the tunnel moist.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, near the house, I was watching for birds near the back yard water feature when a gorgeous male summer tanager came down and watched me for several minutes&#8230;but my first cautious move sent him flying.\u00a0 So instead I got a picture of the round pool of the system with Bermuda grass (not planted by us!)\u00a0 all green and lovely in the evening light out toward the &#8220;orchard.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 And a little Dusky Dancer damselfly in the middle pool of the upper system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-436\" title=\"round-pool-evening213\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/round-pool-evening213.jpg\" alt=\"round-pool-evening213\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/round-pool-evening213.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/round-pool-evening213-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-437\" title=\"dusky-dancer-m209\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dusky-dancer-m209.jpg\" alt=\"dusky-dancer-m209\" width=\"306\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dusky-dancer-m209.jpg 306w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dusky-dancer-m209-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Friends about 10-12 miles away got 13 inches of rain and their stock tanks are full.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They&#8217;d just finished re-working them.\u00a0\u00a0 Timing is everything.<\/p>\n<p>I could have photographed a lot of raccoon tracks,\u00a0 deer tracks, rabbit tracks, smaller-critter-tracks, and so on, but this was a week of checking page proofs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The water that didn&#8217;t run off soaked in;
