{"id":328,"date":"2009-06-13T14:18:49","date_gmt":"2009-06-13T20:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=328"},"modified":"2009-06-13T14:18:49","modified_gmt":"2009-06-13T20:18:49","slug":"uses-of-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=328","title":{"rendered":"Uses of photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Besides the pretty pictures aspect (and I enjoy the pretty pictures, both taking them and seeing them online), photography has multiple uses that support wildlife and land management.\u00a0 For instance&#8230;I&#8217;m almost at the pond and a weakly-flying near-dragonfly-sized insect flies up and lands on the underside of a small limb.\u00a0\u00a0 I can&#8217;t, with my eyesight, see it clearly.\u00a0 I know it&#8217;s not a dragonfly, butterfly, or moth, but what is it?\u00a0 If\u00a0 I get too close it will fly away.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the camera with a zoom lens:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-329\" title=\"hist-adj-ant-lion-adult092\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/hist-adj-ant-lion-adult092.jpg\" alt=\"hist-adj-ant-lion-adult092\" width=\"313\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/hist-adj-ant-lion-adult092.jpg 313w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/hist-adj-ant-lion-adult092-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><!--more-->Though I can&#8217;t see it clearly in real life, once the images\u00a0 are\u00a0 in the computer I can enlarge them, lighten them if necessary, and suddenly&#8211;I remember photographing the same insect last summer, when it was on a window screen.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an adult ant-lion, and last summer, with the help of experts, I was able to give it a name, <em>Euptilon ornatum. <\/em>The presence of adult ant lions and immatures (found but not photographed) indicates successful reproduction here, which means we&#8217;re providing at least minimal habitat for them.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, I&#8217;ve documented dragonfly reproduction by photographing male and female of the same species, including ovipositing by the female.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a pair of Neon Skimmers, <em>Libellula croceipennis<\/em>; the female is coming down to &#8220;splash&#8221; her eggs onto an algal mat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-330\" title=\"neon-skimmer-m075\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/neon-skimmer-m075.jpg\" alt=\"neon-skimmer-m075\" width=\"306\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/neon-skimmer-m075.jpg 306w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/neon-skimmer-m075-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-331\" title=\"neon-skimmer-f-egglaying061\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/neon-skimmer-f-egglaying061.jpg\" alt=\"neon-skimmer-f-egglaying061\" width=\"310\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/neon-skimmer-f-egglaying061.jpg 310w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/neon-skimmer-f-egglaying061-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She uses the wide, rather spatulate final segments of her abdomen to scoop-and-splash as she releases an egg (you can see one, that white bit.)<\/p>\n<p>In the past, I&#8217;ve also photographed odonate larvae in the pond, and the exuviae (the larval exoskeleton left behind when the adult emerges) but don&#8217;t have any current ones to show.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Having photographs of the complete life cycle documents successful reproduction but may be hard to find for all species.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also used photography to document possible disease (on a bird) and external parasites (mites on a dragonfly.)\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes I don&#8217;t even see the interesting details through the lens, but something shows up in the computer that I can research and make note of.\u00a0 The smaller and harder to see the &#8220;bug&#8221;
