{"id":286,"date":"2009-05-29T22:30:23","date_gmt":"2009-05-30T04:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=286"},"modified":"2009-05-29T22:30:23","modified_gmt":"2009-05-30T04:30:23","slug":"butterflies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=286","title":{"rendered":"Butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Among everyone&#8217;s favorite wildlife (and insects) are butterflies.\u00a0\u00a0 The drought last year meant little for butterfly larvae to eat, and thus few butterflies early in the year (and those we had were markedly smaller than the previous year.)\u00a0 But the rains over a month ago made it possible for some wanderers to lay eggs, and those eggs to survive, hatch, and the larvae to pupate&#8230;so now we have more butterflies.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t get good pictures of the fast-flying species of sulfurs who are our dominant types,\u00a0 nor did I catch the big tiger swallowtail in the back yard, but here&#8217;s some of what was flying (and cooperative about photography) in the past\u00a0 week.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287\" title=\"checkered-white297\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/checkered-white297.jpg\" alt=\"checkered-white297\" width=\"277\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/checkered-white297.jpg 277w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/checkered-white297-263x300.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Checkered White is trying to nectar on dogbane (the flowers mostly still in bud.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-288\" title=\"red-admiral296\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/red-admiral296.jpg\" alt=\"red-admiral296\" width=\"300\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/red-admiral296.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/red-admiral296-292x300.jpg 292w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This beautiful, fresh Red Admiral was busy in the same patch of dogbane.<\/p>\n<p>Prairie bluets, which are pink to white (but related to bluets that are in fact blue)\u00a0 attract different butterflies, here a Reakirt&#8217;s Blue, which is blue only on the upper side of the wings:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-289\" title=\"reakirts-blue307\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/reakirts-blue307.jpg\" alt=\"reakirts-blue307\" width=\"295\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/reakirts-blue307.jpg 295w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/reakirts-blue307-285x300.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These guys are tiny&#8211;thumbnail size&#8211;but like all the hairstreaks and groundstreaks, very beautiful.\u00a0 So here&#8217;s another view, with the blue color near the body just showing&#8211;in flight, they &#8220;flicker&#8221; blue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-290\" title=\"reakirts-blue308\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/reakirts-blue308.jpg\" alt=\"reakirts-blue308\" width=\"265\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/reakirts-blue308.jpg 265w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/reakirts-blue308-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, as I went through the creek woods, a very fresh Monarch flitted past me (probably disturbed from its resting place, as it immediately found another) and posed in a shaft of sunlight:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-291\" title=\"monarch313\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/monarch313.jpg\" alt=\"monarch313\" width=\"311\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/monarch313.jpg 311w, http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/monarch313-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The color was even richer than shows here; the angle at which I had to take the picture and the sun angle, created some reflection-flare that paled out the rich orange.<\/p>\n<p>Many people don&#8217;t think of butterflies as &#8220;wildlife&#8221;
