{"id":1016,"date":"2010-04-30T09:34:40","date_gmt":"2010-04-30T15:34:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=1016"},"modified":"2010-04-30T12:22:29","modified_gmt":"2010-04-30T18:22:29","slug":"crane-flies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=1016","title":{"rendered":"Crane Flies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crane flies are odd insects with long legs relative to their body size&#8211;they&#8217;re mistaken sometimes for giant mosquitos, which they aren&#8217;t.\u00a0\u00a0 For such delicate looking creatures, they&#8217;re important in the ecosystem:\u00a0 crane fly larvae feed mostly on fungi, decaying organic matters, sometimes on plant rootlets&#8211;some are predatory.\u00a0\u00a0 The adults are food for birds.\u00a0 There are roughly 1600 species of these guys north of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one of our craneflies I&#8217;ve seen just about every year:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-striped075.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1017\" title=\"crane-fly-striped075\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-striped075.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><!--more-->Notice the pointed abdomen tip and the stripes on the abdomen (and, I think, thorax, but I&#8217;m not positive.\u00a0 It flew before I could get more pictures.)\u00a0 The body&#8217;s maybe an inch long, but I think less.\u00a0 [Edit:\u00a0\u00a0 Info from BugGuide: the pointed abdomen tip means it&#8217;s a female]<\/p>\n<p>Much larger was the crane fly that landed on the upper glass pane of the storm door in the kitchen:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-huge-venter123.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019\" title=\"crane-fly-huge-venter123\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-huge-venter123.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think it might be <em>Holorusia rubiginosa<\/em> but I haven&#8217;t asked for help on its ID yet.\u00a0 The bright outdoor light made it impossible to get ventral details, and shooting it from the outside of the door was hampered by the bright reflections.\u00a0 So here&#8217;s the best I could do:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-huge1271.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020\" title=\"crane-fly-huge127\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-huge1271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This part-lateral view was taken from inside, so it&#8217;s still in silhouette, but it does show the shape of the head, which reminds me of some genera in Neuroptera\u00a0 (though crane flies are in their own family, Tipulidae.)<\/p>\n<p>From outside the door, none of the straight dorsal shots came out (could not get a clear focus and a fast enough shutter speed before it flew away) but I did get this lateral&#8211;not good but what there is&#8211;showing the color and (in the large version) the brilliant green eyes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-huge-lateral124.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1021\" title=\"crane-fly-huge-lateral124\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/crane-fly-huge-lateral124.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is oversharped a little so that the markings on the abdomen show at least a little.\u00a0 Note the very different end of the abdomen&#8230;although for all I know that&#8217;s a sex characteristic.\u00a0\u00a0 [Edit:\u00a0 Info from BugGuide.net&#8211;yes,\u00a0 and this is a male.]\u00a0 The body was easily two inches, maybe a little more, and the &#8220;legspan&#8221;
