{"id":1008,"date":"2010-04-28T14:06:51","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T20:06:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2010-04-28T14:06:51","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T20:06:51","slug":"flowers-that-bloom-in-the-spring-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/?p=1008","title":{"rendered":"Flowers That Bloom in the Spring, II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Engelmann&#8217;s Daisy, one of the old native prairie plants that cattle love to eat.\u00a0\u00a0 We&#8217;re trying to get it established again&#8211;so far, in a protected location:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Engelmann-daisy-bee064.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1009\" title=\"Engelmann-daisy-bee064\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Engelmann-daisy-bee064.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As you can see, they&#8217;re a good pollen source for honeybees.<\/p>\n<p>Another in our yellow collection is Butterweed&#8211;it forms solid masses where the soil and moisture are right.\u00a0\u00a0 The individual flowers are about the size of my thumbnail, clustered tightly on the top of the plant.\u00a0\u00a0 Here a male Checkered White butterfly is having taking a sip:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/checkered-white-butterflyM-butterweed088.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1010\" title=\"checkered-white-butterflyM-butterweed088\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/checkered-white-butterflyM-butterweed088.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also eager for a taste of the Butterweed were other butterflies (some of which would not let me approach at all) including this Variegated Fritillary:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/variegated-fritillary-butterweed083.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1011\" title=\"variegated-fritillary-butterweed083\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/variegated-fritillary-butterweed083.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Down by the creek, there&#8217;s a stretch of gravelly bank that supports some unique (for this place) plants.\u00a0 Unfortunately I found no Prairie Larkspur this year&#8211;I think the severe floods last fall that stripped away some of the remaining soil took them along with all their seeds.\u00a0 But we still have a stand of False Foxglove, <em>Penstemon cobaea<\/em>, one of my favorite spring flowers (if it&#8217;s possible to have a favorite!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Penstemon-cobaea099.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1012\" title=\"Penstemon-cobaea099\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Penstemon-cobaea099.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These flowers seem to glow with their own silvery light, and that&#8217;s especially true of the the buds and young leaves near the top of the inflorescence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P-cobaea-buds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1013\" title=\"P-cobaea-buds\" src=\"http:\/\/www.80acresonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P-cobaea-buds.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;furry&#8221;
